Unbelievable on Netflix
Why do we judge people so easily just because of their difficult past? This question has been playing on my mind after I recently watched a limited series on Netflix “Unbelievable”. Based on a true story, this series made me write this blog.
The story is about a girl who is raped, her story seems unusual and the police assume she is lying based on her past. They even don’t examine the evidence they get at the location and hurry to prove she is lying. Due to the pressure from the police, she accepts that it was a lie. The girl loses friends, and a job, and goes through emotional, mental, and social battel before the truth comes out. This represents a story that occurs time and again. The place change and people change but the story looks identical elsewhere.
When a person reports a robbery, nobody asks if that really happen? But when a victim complains about rape or sexual abuse, the first question is always, did that really happen? I understand that there are so many fake reports now and then. There are people taking benefit of these things and accusing innocent people. But that doesn’t mean the justice is denied at the first sign the truth becomes inconvenient. I am not saying one should blindly believe when someone reports rape or sexual violence but they should believe enough that they look and search for the evidence. No one should turn a blind eye just because they find the truth somewhat unconventional.
When a crime occurs, the victim doesn’t get justice until the real culprit is put behind bars. In my opinion, the investigators or anyone with the job to provide justice need to be held to a higher standard. Their ability or inability to do their job decides a person’s present and future. The least effort should be to collect and examine the evidence thoroughly and fairly. Rape is a serious allegation, and it should be looked at as such when examining the evidence.
