When They See Us On Netflix
Why do we hate someone just because they are from a different race or community? Why do people keep career, name, and fame above someone else life?
I recently watched “When They See Us” on Netflix. It is the story of five boys who were sent to prison for a crime they never committed which is also a true story. They happen to be around when the police arrive at the crime scene of a woman raped and left to die. Just because they were black or Hispanic (not white), the investigator assume they had done it. The police threaten those 4 boys (aged below 16) and 1 who was 16 at the time, they keep them in questioning for hours without food or water and make them confess the crime. The investigators completely neglect the evidence in front of them and even adjust the timeline of the crime and ignore and hide the evidence to fit the narrative.
This looks so difficult to watch. Just because a serious issue occurred, doesn’t mean you find the first person who seems to be easy to blame and put them in prison. How can someone be so cruel? They put innocent lives inside just to save your career and make a name. They don’t even bother to look at the evidence that actually exists. Any amount of money is enough to compensate the victims for what they went through emotionally, mentally, socially, and physically till the real culprit was found. This story show demons that exist in our society and contribute to injustice.
When a crime occurs, the victim suffers but they don’t get justice until the real culprit is put behind bars. It is necessary, that the investigators or whoever has the job to provide justice need to be held to a higher standard. The least effort by them should be to look at the evidence and examine through properly. Doing this not only helps to put the real culprit behind bars but may also prevent any possible crimes in the future.
